SURYA SEN, UTTAR PRADESH
Surya Sen, a resident of Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh, opened a school in his village to promote education. He was one of the lucky children who moved out of his village ‘Kansharia’ to obtain higher education. He went on to become an engineer and started working in Mumbai but he felt a sense of responsibility towards his village and his community which compelled him to set up a school named ‘Ajivam’. Around 30-35% of students in the school come from underprivileged backgrounds and the monthly fees vary between Rs 200 and Rs 500, based on the financial situation of the children. While the school had 49 students initially, it has now grown to 160 students and nine teachers.
