Before the Gujarat elections of 2003, SPRAT distributed 2.2 million Harmony Leaflets. These leaflets held messages to increase voter awareness of possible manipulation of politicians. They encouraged free thought in decision making regarding the election and informed the population about government actions which we believe were horribly detrimental to society during the 2002 riots. We also attempted to clarify the tenents of Hinduism so that voters could distinguish between fact and political statements.
To carry on the spirit of our first Harmony Leaflets campaign, we wish to continue to promote communal understanding and cross-faith unity by distributing messages of harmony and integration using common postage-free cards and leaflets. Not only would these be inspiring messages for the recipient, they will be bearers of provocative thought; after receiving a leaflet the reader will add more suggestions along with their signature and religious identity. These leaflets will then be passed along to members of other religious groups, and as signatures are added, common thought and understanding will be established.
