IVF (in vitro fertilisation) – Baby – India
Over the years, India has given a number of innovations to the world. One of those was on October 3, 1978, when Dr. Subhash Mukherjee became the first physician in India and the second in the world to create a test tube baby. Test tube baby Durga aka Kanupriya Agarwal celebrated her 40th birthday among family and friends on October 6 in Pune. She is India’s first and the world’s second test tube baby and the result of late Dr. Subhash Mukharjee’s work in IVF. When asked about how she was exposed to the fact that she was an IVF baby (in vitro fertilization), she said, “I always grew up with the fact that I was ‘it’. I knew my parents are making rounds to the doctors with me to know more about my health, but I did grow up normally and had a normal childhood.”
