How Indian Railways is ensuring cleanliness on tracks.
Laying emphasis on cleanliness, Indian Railways is undertaking the massive exercise to keep not just the trains and stations clean but also ensure cleaning of tracks on a regular basis. To help in the mammoth exercise, ‘track cleaning machines’ have been introduced by Northern Railways. Currently, these machines operate in Delhi but have also been sent to Lucknow and Varanasi on a pilot project basis. According to Northern Railways, the equipment is approximately 9-10 times more powerful than a normal blower of a vacuum cleaner, which is used in homes. It has the capacity to store 6 MT waste. It can be tilted at the earmarked place to empty the waste. The present machine is the first prototype to meet this objective. “It is envisaged to augment the cleaning efforts at station yards considerably,” says Railways.
