Dr. Laxmi Gautam is working hard to ensure a dignified life and death of widows in Varanasi. She is deeply disturbed by the fact of how women, after the death of their husbands are left to die alone. Dr. Laxmi Gautam ensures that each dead body of a widow she finds, get a dignified and respectable cremation. Her NGO, Kanak Dhara Foundation, looks into the needs of abandoned widows in Varanasi. She has also been awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar by President Pranab Mukherjee for her efforts.
