Violence did, does and likely will have a role. But all forms of mindless, target-less, disproportionate violence is against civility and is counter productive.
Give a man some free time, or extra money & watch. If he uses it constructively give some more. If unproductively, tax it.
Sophisticated “believers” politely undermine other people’s religious beliefs; fanatics do this curtly. Who is more honest?
